CDCP Dentist Waterloo

For a lot of Waterloo families, dental care has been something you do when something hurts — not something you do to prevent problems. That’s not a judgement, it’s just what happens when there’s no coverage and the bill lands entirely on you. The Canadian Dental Care Plan changes the math for people who’ve been in that position.

Parkside Drive Dental is a participating CDCP provider. If you have no dental benefits and your household income is under $90,000 a year, you may be eligible for coverage. Here’s what you need to know before you book.

What Is the CDCP?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal government program delivered through Health Canada and administered by Sun Life. It was created to provide coverage for Canadians who earn too much to access most provincial assistance programs, but don’t have a dental plan through work or private insurance.

When you come in as a CDCP patient, we bill Sun Life directly. You’re not required to pay in full and submit your own claim afterward. The office handles that process. Depending on your household income, your out-of-pocket amount could be as low as zero.

Do You Qualify?

There are four conditions you need to meet:

  • You’re a Canadian resident who filed a tax return here for the previous year
  • Your adjusted family net income falls below $90,000
  • You have no dental benefits available through an employer, pension, or purchased insurance plan

Your spouse or common-law partner (if you have one) also filed a Canadian tax return
Something worth knowing: having access to employer dental benefits disqualifies you — even if you’ve never actually used the coverage. Opting out doesn’t change your eligibility status.

On the other side, if you’re currently receiving dental help through a provincial program like Healthy Smiles Ontario, you can still apply for the CDCP. The two plans work together, so there’s no duplication in what gets covered.

CDCP Dentist in Waterloo — Parkside Drive Dental

Parkside Drive Dental has been caring for Waterloo families since 1998. Dr. Jacqueline Whiteside and Dr. Cathy Bekhyt lead the clinical team, with a patient-centered approach that prioritizes education and clear communication at every appointment.

When you call to book as a CDCP patient, we confirm your coverage ahead of time so you’re not dealing with billing questions while you’re in the chair. We go through what’s covered and what you may owe before any treatment starts.

We’re located at 550 Parkside Drive Unit A5, on the northeast corner of Weber St. N and Parkside Drive — just south of the Conestoga Parkway. If you take the ION, we’re a short ride from the Northfield stop. There’s parking on site.

We’re open Monday through Friday, with evening appointments on Wednesdays and Thursdays to fit around your work schedule.

What Does the CDCP Cover?

Coverage under the plan is wider than most people expect. It addresses everything from routine maintenance to situations where a tooth needs significant treatment or removal.

Preventive Services

exams, cleanings, X-rays, and fluoride. These are the appointments that keep your mouth healthy and catch issues before they require more involved care.

Restorations

fillings for cavities and minor damage. Decay that’s caught early stays manageable. Decay that’s left alone becomes a root canal conversation.

Endodontic Treatment

root canals for teeth that are infected or badly damaged but can still be saved. The CDCP covers this treatment when it’s clinically indicated.

Periodontal Care

treatment for gum disease, including scaling and root planing. Healthy gums are what hold your teeth in place — this coverage matters more than people realize.

Major Restorations

crowns and bridges for teeth that need more than a filling. Preauthorization is required for this category before treatment begins.

Oral Surgery

extractions when a tooth can’t be restored. This includes standard and surgical removals.

Dentures

complete and partial dentures for patients with missing teeth.

Emergency Exams

no frequency limits apply. If you’re in pain, you can be seen and the exam is covered.

Understanding Your Co-Payment

The CDCP covers a portion of treatment costs. What you pay depends on your household income:

  • Under $70,000: no co-payment required
  • $70,000 to $79,999: 40% of the CDCP fee schedule
  • $80,000 to $89,999: 60% of the CDCP fee schedule

One thing to be clear about: dental offices bill at their own standard fees, which may be higher than the CDCP reimbursement rate. If there’s a gap between the plan rate and the office fee, that difference is your responsibility on top of any applicable co-payment. We tell you those numbers before treatment, not after.

How to Apply

Apply online through your My Service Canada Account, or by calling Service Canada at 1-833-537-4342. Once your application is processed and approved, Sun Life mails you a welcome package containing your member card and your official coverage start date.

Your coverage start date is the key detail. Appointments scheduled before that date aren’t covered, even if you’ve already been approved. Hold off on booking until your card arrives and your start date is confirmed.

The CDCP runs on an annual renewal cycle. If you don’t renew during the renewal window, your coverage ends and a new application is required to get back on the plan.

Getting the Most from Your CDCP Benefits

Preventive visits — exams and cleanings — cost most CDCP patients nothing. These are the appointments that make the biggest difference long-term, and the plan is specifically designed to make them accessible. If cost has been the reason you’ve been putting off routine care, the CDCP removes that barrier. Use it.

If you have questions before coming in, give us a call or send an email. We’re happy to go over coverage details in advance so your first appointment is straightforward.
